Steve’s range of experience spans nearly 30 years within the media industry, and has been concentrated in executive leadership, strategy and account management within agencies in the UK and Australia across both domestic and international accounts. Steve built his career in international media in London. He joined Saatchi & Saatchi as their first media graduate trainee in 1987. He then moved to WCRS in 1989 where, as Media Manager, he ran their international media function. His major project was developing communication and media strategies across Europe for United Distillers (Johnnie Walker), a service rolled out for other clients such as BMW, Parker Pens and BBC World Service.
After a brief period of Kombi travelling and media sales, Steve joined Clemenger Sydney in 1994 as a Media Strategist and worked across a wide range of accounts including Lion Nathan, Bulmer, FedEx and NSW Lotteries. This culminated in Steve heading the $80m Pepsico Media Group which included Pizza Hut, KFC, Frito Lay and Pepsi.
Steve joined Carat Sydney at its launch 1999 as Client Service Director and was at the forefront of successfully integrating Carat global processes and tools into the new Sydney operation. He also ran accounts such as EMI, LG, Levi Strauss, Freedom Furniture and the successful launch of Orange in Australia.
After a brief stint back in the UK at Frontline Media as Client Service Director (2001-2003) he returned to Australia to head OMD’s dedicated McDonald’s Media Unit in 2003. He worked on the highly successful brand reinvention of McDonald’s in 2003 and served on OMD’s Global Leadership Team for the account. Steve was then promoted (and relocated) to Managing Director, OMD Melbourne in April 2007. He drove an ambitious transformation of the agency, which trebled the revenue & profit over his 7 year tenure as a consequence. He also became the MFA’s inaugural Melbourne Chairman to drive industry leadership in the Melbourne market.
Steve returned “home” to Sydney in 2014 as National Media Director of creative agency 303Lowe. After helping them restructure their media operations, he has been working as an executive leadership and communications consultant. This work inspired him to recently launch Media Operations Transparency with his partner Andrew Norris, an innovative new consultancy designed to help clients navigate & evolve their media thinking in a complex period of change.
