Bob is widely as acknowledged as one of the public relations profession’s leading strategists, having held senior management positions at four of the world’s leading PR firms and counseled scores of Fortune 100 companies. His expertise encompasses crisis preparedness and crisis management, litigation support, consumer and B-2-B marketing communications, traditional and social media relations, corporate reputation management, executive positioning, and organizational communications.
Working in partnership with Net Diligence, a leading network security consultancy, Bob recently developed a tool for that organization’s E-risk hub to help clients understand how to prepare for and calculate the costs of managing communications in the event of crises such as data breaches wherein sensitive information is compromised. Earlier in his career, Bob managed Midwest regions for Burson-Marsteller, Fleishman-Hillard, and Shandwick. He served Burson as President and CEO, Midwest, a territory stretching from Canada to Texas and from Pennsylvania to California.
The offices under his leadership employed more than 100 people, and accounted for more than $22 million in annualized fee income from clients. McEwen joined Burson after three years at Fleishman-Hillard where he managed the Chicago, Minneapolis and Kansas City offices. His work at FH included two award-winning case studies in crisis management: one for United Airlines on 9-11-01 and its aftermath, the other for Sara Lee after deaths caused by bacteria traced to a meatpacking plant. Before moving to Chicago, McEwen served as managing director of the Detroit office of Shandwick and head of that agency’s national industrial practice group, encompassing the automotive, chemical, engineering, energy and telecommunications sectors. Previously he had been a senior vice president and regional director for Hill and Knowlton.
While a vice-president at Carl Byoir & Associates, McEwen won three Silver Anvils, the “Oscars” of the public relations profession, for marketing (Kodak’s disc camera launch), employee communications (for corporate restructuring), and government lobbying (for influencing Reagan Administration monetary policy). McEwen also is a former news reporter, editor and award winning playwright.
